How do I check cash is real and not counterfeit

How do I check cash is real and not counterfeit

Simple ways to check:

  • Look for raised text and markings
  • Feel the paper
  • Look for the metallic thread
  • Check the watermark
  • A UV lamp (don’t use the small keyring versions)
  • Remember bank notes increase in size, £50 notes are bigger than £20, £20 are bigger than £10 and so on…

I’ve found a counterfeit note, what do I do?

It is a criminal offence to hold onto or pass on counterfeit notes. If you suspect a note is counterfeit, take it to the police as soon as possible. They will give you a receipt and it will be sent off for testing, if your note is found to be legitimate then you will be given a refund. If you received the cash as part of payment for an item then read this.

The £20 note is most commonly counterfeited so here is what to look for:

What about the other notes?

A full guide on bank notes can be found on the Bank of England’s Website

Did you know the new £5 notes will be coming out this year (2016)?
