Should this Uber (taxi) driver be sued for £3,500,000?

Taxi & Uber drivers get to see many of us at our worst and this night was pretty rough for Edward Cuban (the Uber driver).

His passenger Benjamin Golden, aged 32, a now sacked Taco Bell executive, was filmed slapping, punching and pulling the driver’s hair (see the video below, from 2:15)

Mr Caban filed for $25,000 (£17,500ish) damages for distress caused by Mr Golden and won his case back in November, when Golden was charged.

However as of Jan 18th, Golden (the passenger) has sued the driver for $5 million (£3.5m), claiming the video was recorded without his consent and the outcome of the (now viral) video has meant he can’t get a job, he’s suffered severe emotional distress, he was humiliated, and suffers from anxiety.

Skip the video to 2:15 to see it all start.

Lesson: Don’t go around beating people up in cars.
Lesson 2: Some people are rich because they’re willing to step on anyone they can 🙁

When the original video came out Golden said

“It’s not me in the video, it’s not me,”
“It was hard to watch and I’m ashamed.”

However it seems he has changed his mind. We will keep you informed of any updates to this story.

Important things to remember with everything we post:

  • If you earn over your personal allowance (currently £12,570 a year) HMRC need to get their % cut (even if the money is in cash or from another country)
  • If you’re working for yourself / earning an income on the side you need to let HMRC know – There are numerous benefits but also some drawbacks
  • You need to always ensure whatever you’re doing is legal and not hurting anyone else – be careful and always think twice
  • Some income streams may require you to have DBS check, licence, insurance or qualifications before you can start to profit from it, do your research.
  • Be careful that any additional income doesn’t compromise your studies or main income/job
  • If you work for a company check your contract, if you don’t inform them you’re working on other side projects outside of work they may have grounds to ownership on this work
