1,827 Vodafone customers hacked

1,827 Vodafone customers hacked

Another day, another ‘hacking’. This time less than 2000 people from Vodafone have had their accounts accessed, allowing those hackers to see/copy customers’ names, their mobile phone numbers, bank sort codes and the last four digits of their bank account numbers.

On their own these details are not very useful but they could be used to try and access other accounts and commit fraud etc.

The difference here between TalkTalk hack and this Vodafone ‘hack’ is that these details were most likely purchased from the ‘dark web’ aka dodgy websites that sell logins, credit card details etc.

Vodafone say they’ve notified those customers however it’s worth checking just in case HOWEVER always be careful after a hack has happened as the hackers could be sending you emails pretending to be Vodafone etc. If you want to double check ring them using the number on their website.

Report any unusual activity on your accounts to your bank and, if you are in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, to the national fraud and internet crime reporting centre Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or http://www.actionfraud.police.uk. If you are in Scotland, call Police Scotland

Important things to remember with everything we post:

  • If you earn over your personal allowance (currently £12,570 a year) HMRC need to get their % cut (even if the money is in cash or from another country)
  • If you’re working for yourself / earning an income on the side you need to let HMRC know – There are numerous benefits but also some drawbacks
  • You need to always ensure whatever you’re doing is legal and not hurting anyone else – be careful and always think twice
  • Some income streams may require you to have DBS check, licence, insurance or qualifications before you can start to profit from it, do your research.
  • Be careful that any additional income doesn’t compromise your studies or main income/job
  • If you work for a company check your contract, if you don’t inform them you’re working on other side projects outside of work they may have grounds to ownership on this work
