What is a tech support scam and how to avoid them

A very common scam, which to the untrained eye is rather scary but easily removed.

Things to remember:

  • Microsoft (or any other company) will never ask you to ring them to resolve an issue on your computer.
  • The internet is full of fakers, scammers and things designed to scare you.
  • You should never allow ANYONE to access your computer remotely (e.g. GoToPC, GoToAssist, Teamviewer etc) unless you know they’re a trusted person (e.g. your close friend who is good with computers)
  • Only ever install Virus software from reputable companies e.g. Windows Defender (built into all Windows PCs) or Avira, Kaspersky or Bitdefender
