Virgil Abloh (director of Louis Vuitton’s Menswear and Off-White Founder) passed away in 2021 but he left this amazing ‘how to build a brand’ guide

Virgil was a very well-known brand creator and influencer, working with the likes of Nike, IKEA, Jimmy Choo etc, sadly in 2021 he died from a rare type of cancer, however, before his death he created a free resource called ‘Free Game’, this static (and completely public access) webpage was basically a frequently asked questions for building a new brand from nothing, the website still exists.

Virgil described the site as:

The exact notions and tools that I used to formulate my career open to all. For free.

…an attempt to provide a mass form of mentorship to give information and access to black POC and to all those that are interested – Giving all the ability to consider a step-by-step guide to building their brand based on my past experience.

The document outlines how to:

  • NAME YOUR BRAND
  • OBTAIN A TRADEMARK
  • USE ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE
  • MAKE A SCREEN PRINT
  • FIND BLANKS
  • SHOOT A LOOKBOOK
  • MAKE A WEBSITE
  • ADD SHOPIFY
  • OVERARCHING LECTURES
  • FIGURES OF SPEECH CATALOGUE
  • PERSONAL MENTORS
  • FURTHER INSPIRATION

Important things to remember with everything we post:

  • If you earn over your personal allowance (currently £12,570 a year) HMRC need to get their % cut (even if the money is in cash or from another country)
  • If you’re working for yourself / earning an income on the side you need to let HMRC know – There are numerous benefits but also some drawbacks
  • You need to always ensure whatever you’re doing is legal and not hurting anyone else – be careful and always think twice
  • Some income streams may require you to have DBS check, licence, insurance or qualifications before you can start to profit from it, do your research.
  • Be careful that any additional income doesn’t compromise your studies or main income/job
  • If you work for a company check your contract, if you don’t inform them you’re working on other side projects outside of work they may have grounds to ownership on this work
