The Government officially advises every UK household to have an Emergency Kit ready at home. For 15 years, we’ve been researching, buying, and testing the gear that goes into Emergency Kits. Here are the 44 items we would recommend to friends, family and you all:
We appreciate that some of these items might feel like "overkill," but think of this as a physical insurance policy. Like any insurance, you hope you never have to use it, but when things go wrong, you'll be incredibly glad it's there. This isn't just a kit; it’s a proactive safeguard for your home and those who live there.
Also, it's important to make changes/additions based on your location, personal circumstances and number of people/animals in your family. Our list isn't exhaustive either, we've probably missed a few things, so would welcome your thoughts (good or bad).
Most of these are kept in ready-to-go large backpacks; larger items are used elsewhere in the house or stored alongside the backpacks. Food and Water items are swapped out roughly every year or so with an expiry date added to the calendar as a reminder for us to eat/swap/replenish etc.
p.s. don't come knocking at our front door if there ever is a countrywide emergency 🤣
