Remember these important things if you ever have car problems on the motorway:

1) Move over as soon as safely possible to the hard shoulder, turn on your hazards, continue off the motorway and find safety off the motorway or into an Emergency Refuge Area (e.g. on a Smart Motorway).

2) If the only option is to stop on the hard shoulder, park the car as far to the left as you can, if the weather is dark/misty etc keep your side lights on.

3) Then, if it is safe to do so, exit via the left-hand doors and wait behind the safety barrier (in position 1 or further up the verge away from the car if possible/safe, look out for drops/uneven ground etc). Put on hi-viz. Remain Alert. Do not return to your car. Do not place a light or hazard warning triangle out. Leave animals in the car (unless an emergency). Face oncoming traffic. Again, wait well away from your vehicle and moving traffic, behind the safety barrier where there is one.

4) If you cannot reach the hard shoulder stay in the car with your seat belts on, hazards on and dial 999
