🎓 Could student loans become INTEREST-FREE, including interest already added?

A UK Parliament petition is calling for ALL interest on student loans to be abolished, with existing balances recalculated as though interest had never been charged!

Removing interest retrospectively might be a step too far for some, particularly given the potential cost to taxpayers, but it raises important questions about how fairly graduates have been treated, especially when repayment terms have changed AFTER they took out their loans.

Since 2012, students in England have faced tuition fees initially set at up to £9,000 a year (and higher since), with many graduating owing £40,000, £50,000 or more.

💸 Here’s what frustrates so many graduates:

❌ You can repay thousands of pounds and still owe MORE than when you graduated.

❌ Interest can build up faster than your repayments reduce the balance. For example, someone owing £50,000 at 6% interest could see around £3,000 added in a year, even if they’ve already repaid £1,000!

❌ Repayment thresholds have repeatedly been frozen, meaning more of your salary can be taken as wages increase, even if you’re no better off after inflation.

❌ Some graduates face repayments for up to 30 years, while newer Plan 5 borrowers face up to 40 years. Any remaining debt is then written off, meaning higher earners can end up repaying far more than others. For many, it effectively becomes an additional 9% income tax on earnings above the repayment threshold, potentially for decades!

❌ Perhaps most frustratingly, and the biggest reason we believe the system is unfair, the Government can change the repayment terms AFTER you’ve taken out the loan. Students made major financial decisions, often at just 18 years old, based on the terms presented to them at the time, only for those terms to change years later. This includes changing how much graduates must earn before repayments begin, potentially leaving them paying back more than originally expected.

📢 What would the petition actually change?

If implemented, interest would stop accumulating and existing balances would be recalculated to remove interest previously added.

Importantly, this wouldn’t automatically reduce everyone’s monthly repayments, which are based on earnings rather than the amount owed. It could significantly reduce the total amount some graduates repay, although those whose loans would eventually be written off might see little or no financial benefit.

✍️ Read the petition and decide whether to sign:

At 10,000 signatures, the Government must respond. At 100,000, the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.

💬 Did you go to university from 2012 onwards? How much did you borrow, how much have you repaid, and how much do you STILL owe?
