Geocaching – The free GPS Treasure hunting game

Geocaching – The free GPS Treasure hunting game

Great with kids as well as adults – You basically download an app that gives you clues (& rough GPS info) to locations of hidden ‘treasure’ near you, you then hunt for the treasure container and ideally place something of interest inside, sign and date a book/piece of paper. You can also setup the ‘treasure’ spots and then check the website to see if anyone else has visited.

The beauty of this game is it can be played everywhere and it’s great for all ages, just remember to always put the cache/treasure back as you found it and ideally with something new inside it.

What do I need to play?

  • A phone or GPS device
  • Access to https://www.geocaching.com/play (or other apps such as Cachly, c:geo or GeoCaches)
  • Pen/Pencil – To write in the cache boxes
  • Plenty of time
  • Optional – Small trinkets/toys (ideal for junior/young players). The idea is to swap these with items found inside the cache.

A few things extra to buy to make it better

Important things to remember with everything we post:

  • If you earn over your personal allowance (currently £12,570 a year) HMRC need to get their % cut (even if the money is in cash or from another country)
  • If you’re working for yourself / earning an income on the side you need to let HMRC know – There are numerous benefits but also some drawbacks
  • You need to always ensure whatever you’re doing is legal and not hurting anyone else – be careful and always think twice
  • Some income streams may require you to have DBS check, licence, insurance or qualifications before you can start to profit from it, do your research.
  • Be careful that any additional income doesn’t compromise your studies or main income/job
  • If you work for a company check your contract, if you don’t inform them you’re working on other side projects outside of work they may have grounds to ownership on this work
