Your EHIC or GHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance, and it's often a requirement for many travel insurance policies. It may not cover all health costs, never covers repatriation costs, ski/mountain rescue costs, private medical facility use or private ambulances but it will provide you with the equivalent healthcare that a local would get, in many cases this is free NHS-like care, with a big caveat that some countries still charge local residents for care so if that's the case you will pay the same as a local.
