Marketing specialist Lukas Yla, aged 25 from Lithuania moved to San Francisco 5 years ago, he landed a job at a car sharing company but obviously wants to change paths so has been applying for jobs in this rather epic style.
He made his own fake delivery company t-shirt (Postmate couriers is like Deliveroo), went and purchased boxes of tasty looking doughnuts and attached his cover letter to the inside!
He then found the people who made the decisions in the companies he wanted to work for and hand delivered them the boxes.
‘It felt like the right moment to challenge myself,’
‘How far can I go in a city where competition is much tougher, where I know no one, I don’t have work experience in the USA, and probably I will need to start all over again?’
‘I was looking for the most direct way to reach decision makers at the companies. I thought that I might fail competing only on “resume” level with other candidates that have work experience in San Francisco,’
The actual cover letter wording:
‘So, as a marketing specialist, I performed SWOT analysis of myself, my competition, my target audience and crafted this job-hunting campaign.
‘It might look like a stunt, but it was a precisely crafted campaign, that went through multiple iterations until it started succeeding. Once I launched the campaign, I performed A/B tests on companies of different sizes, different target audiences, and with variations on the copy. I used a special URL to measure the offline outcomes and act on them to maximize ROI of the campaign.’
The results:
‘I’ve delivered over 40 boxes of doughnuts so far’ he says. ‘A little bit more than 10 to ad/creative agencies and the rest to tech companies. I landed 10 interviews, and I am in the interview process with couple of companies.’
Wait a minute I want to see more photos of doughnuts:
Fair enough, we spent a good couple of minutes on their Instagram!
