How to save time and money at the airport

How to save time and money at the airport

1. Know what you can and cannot bring through security. This will help you avoid surprises and costly delays or products going into the bin at the airport, we’ve seen plenty of expensive perfume/aftershave being thrown away!

2. Plan in advance for extra luggage and double check the weight of your luggage at home, e.g. paying for an extra bag / heavy bag on the day of your flight will be more expensive than booking it a day/week before.

3. Dress comfortably and strategically. Wearing comfortable shoes will help you get through security faster, and layering your clothing will help you stay comfortable in case of any delays + allow you to spread your baggage allowance. Plan to carry a jumper/hoodie as this is an ideal makeshift pillow.

4. Bring your own snacks and drinks. Airport food can be expensive, so it’s worth it to pack your own snacks and drinks to save money (remember you can bring empty water bottles through security and most airports have FREE water available).

5. Avoid using airport services that come with a fee, although there is a slight caveat with some airport lounges as sometimes they can be cost-effective. If possible, use the free services offered by the airport, such as WiFi, free water refill & charging stations.

6. Plan ahead for your transportation to and from the airport. This can help you save money on taxis or other transportation costs. Book car parks etc well in advance to save on the price. Consider parking nearby to the airport using something like JustPark or even better get a family member to drop/collect you!

7. Keep an eye out for deals and discounts. Sign up for newsletters from your favourite airlines or travel websites to stay updated on the latest deals.

8. Click and collect items from the likes of Boots AFTER security – This allows you lock in savings before you get to the airport + allows you to travel with these items on your person/in your hand luggage. Just be cautious which location you collect from as some Boots stores are BEFORE security!

9. Look out for possible ways to jump any queue, we’re not suggesting you start pushing in but see if walking a little further would open you up to a clearer check-in desk, security line etc.

10. Make sure you disable mobile roaming before you take off for when you arrive the other end, we forgot this once and woke up after 8 hours and was charged over £30 in data usage before we realised!

Important things to remember with everything we post:

  • If you earn over your personal allowance (currently £12,570 a year) HMRC need to get their % cut (even if the money is in cash or from another country)
  • If you’re working for yourself / earning an income on the side you need to let HMRC know – There are numerous benefits but also some drawbacks
  • You need to always ensure whatever you’re doing is legal and not hurting anyone else – be careful and always think twice
  • Some income streams may require you to have DBS check, licence, insurance or qualifications before you can start to profit from it, do your research.
  • Be careful that any additional income doesn’t compromise your studies or main income/job
  • If you work for a company check your contract, if you don’t inform them you’re working on other side projects outside of work they may have grounds to ownership on this work
