Alex Bax, 26, from Stepney, east London, found what looked to be chicken head in his £3 box of fried chicken wings that he grabbed from a Tesco Express on his lunch break, he was so disgusted that it had a ‘beak’ on it that he threw the box in the skip, after of course snapping a photo and posting the photo of Tesco’s Facebook page. Tesco later confirmed that a ‘chicken technologist’ had inspected the photo and had stated it was a ‘misshapen wing’.
‘I was about two chicken wings in and when I looked down and saw it. ‘I could make out where the eyes should be and a bit of a beak and I was like ‘what the f**k is this?’. ‘It looked like a chicken head and that put me right off my food so the whole box went straight down the rubbish shoot and into the skip. ‘It’s put me off Tesco’s chicken wings – at least for a while.’
The Tesco customer service assistant on their Facebook page responded with:
‘Well, I’ve been running round like a headless chicken trying to hatch a plan for this one. ‘I suspect there’s been a little fowl play here, looks like we’ve been caught with egg on our face. ‘Our staff work around the cluck to ensure egg-cellent quality but it seems we’ve tried to wing it. I am surprised to see the wings haven’t turned out all they’ve cracked up to be. ‘Cheers chick.’
Alex saw the funny side of the cock-up and even posted his own pun, claiming that Tesco’s response was an
‘egg-cellent reply [that] cracked me up’.
Tesco later went on to say:
‘We should have made it clear, it’s not a chicken head.. We’ve double checked with our chicken technologist and that’s not possible. ‘This piece just happens to be shaped that way.’
What should I do if I find something suspect?
Snap a photo
Snap a photo of the container (including Best Before Date, Batch Codes, Barcodes etc)
Snap a photo of your FULL receipt, include all the numbers at the bottom of the receipt, this tells them the exact time and date of the purchase & sometimes even who served you (e.g. Asda receipts have an employee number)
Contact the supermarket / store on social media (quicker responses), ideally via private messenger. Include full details, your address and a few photos
If the compensation/refund is fare then take it but if not consider taking it to the press
