Austin Reed (suits etc) collapses after Administrators can’t find a buyer for the 120 stores (1000 jobs lost)

Nearly 1,000 jobs to be lost as Austin Reed’s administrators AlixPartners, can’t find a buyer for the 116-year-old tailoring company, remaining stock and 120 stores.

Brands such as Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Sports Direct and Hawes & Curtis have all expressed an interest in the brand but have failed.

Peter Saville, of administrator Alix Partners, said:

“Despite a significant number of interested parties coming forward it became clear as the process progressed that a viable solution which kept the business whole was not forthcoming. As a result we have made the difficult decision to cease trading the business and commence a wind-down of the estate”

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all employees for their support and efforts during this unsettling period and wish them well for the future,”

Online sites like Suits Direct will have no doubt been adding more pressure to the retailer.

Important things to remember with everything we post:

  • If you earn over your personal allowance (currently £12,570 a year) HMRC need to get their % cut (even if the money is in cash or from another country)
  • If you’re working for yourself / earning an income on the side you need to let HMRC know – There are numerous benefits but also some drawbacks
  • You need to always ensure whatever you’re doing is legal and not hurting anyone else – be careful and always think twice
  • Some income streams may require you to have DBS check, licence, insurance or qualifications before you can start to profit from it, do your research.
  • Be careful that any additional income doesn’t compromise your studies or main income/job
  • If you work for a company check your contract, if you don’t inform them you’re working on other side projects outside of work they may have grounds to ownership on this work
