More proof living in London is crazy! £500PCM for this mattress under the stairs…

Alex Lomax, 23, saw a “furnished” room for rent on London2Let website, based in Clapham, south-west London she went to visit it.

The advert described the room as:

“We are looking for a friendly, open-minded and outgoing person to join our houseshare in a great period house in Clapham.

We’re a good bunch and like to chill out a lot together – not really looking for somebody that just wants to stay in their room. Room comes with a bed.”

  • Sociable Flatmates
  • Easy access to local tube stations.
  • 1 single furnished room
  • Room comes with a bed
  • Bills £60pcm

It actually turned out to be this:

Ms Lomax who had come especially to London from Nottingham to view told the BBC:

“There was a landlord and I was shown the kitchen and the under-stairs cupboard – he seemed deadly serious, which is the worrying part.

Do you think all online room listings should legally have to include photos of the room?

The listing is still live on http://www.london2let.com/rooms/to-rent/clapham-SW11/L2L13385-101/

Important things to remember with everything we post:

  • If you earn over your personal allowance (currently £12,570 a year) HMRC need to get their % cut (even if the money is in cash or from another country)
  • If you’re working for yourself / earning an income on the side you need to let HMRC know – There are numerous benefits but also some drawbacks
  • You need to always ensure whatever you’re doing is legal and not hurting anyone else – be careful and always think twice
  • Some income streams may require you to have DBS check, licence, insurance or qualifications before you can start to profit from it, do your research.
  • Be careful that any additional income doesn’t compromise your studies or main income/job
  • If you work for a company check your contract, if you don’t inform them you’re working on other side projects outside of work they may have grounds to ownership on this work
